The challenging climb of 2,300 meters is developed from an altitude of 800 meters, to reach the highest point at 1730 meters, on top of Mount Ventasso, from which the eye can embrace the whole Apennine Reggiano, the Parmesan, and the ridge that separates from Tuscany and from the Lunigiana. The marathon is mostly on unpaved roads; however, it is fully safe and does not include exposed or dangerous routes. The route alternates between chesnut woods, beeches, and higher in altitude, moorland. It passes by villages made of stone, small chapels hidden in the woods, fresh springs, and a lake filled with turquoise water, around which the route runs.
For several years now, the second Sunday of July represents a fixed appointment at Busana, in the high Reggiano Apennines, for all lovers of marathons amidst nature: the Ventasso Ecomarathon,a race unique in its kind for that strange balance that has been created around itself, mystically managing to combine sport, athletic performance, amateur spirit, solidarity, commitment to the promotion of the territory, volunteer work, and a immesurable desire to return and to find youself.A grand race, so to speak, but one tobe run on the trails surrounding Mount Ventasso, a place of ancient legends, where the wolf is back home.
A dream thought of by a few, a couple years ago, became a challenge and, is now the biggest sporting event of the high Reggiano Apennines, which attracts famous Italian and foreign runners, as well as many ordinary runners who are the real heart of the event.
It took courage to think of organizing a marathon rectory, with its 42 Km on a path so rough and wild, but the gamble paid off.
Today the Ventasso Ecomarathon is known throughout Italy as one of the best sports events involving running through nature and its name is now associated with an image of great value.
The Ventasso Ecomarathon represents today, for all lovers of the race trail, the event which has greatly contributed to the increasing popularity of the race through nature in Italy.
Its path, difficult, but unforgettable, unveils to the athletes one of the loveliest corners of the entire Apennines.
